when i shot off those brief musings about the etchings i wasn't wondering
where i could find them (but thanks for the bon voyage), i've seen them, but
more about the ontology of written text verses images
with regards to artist/poet blake, is more ascendancy still given to the
word?--way past the point of difficulty in reproduction--but please don't miss
understand me, i know that there is a profound difference between the sensual
experience of the book and reading via the computer screen, i guess i was just
thinking about what are those differences?
is it something that is "hard wired" in us or will there be fundamental
changes when there are four or five generations of adults whose primary
experience with text has been though the screen? i personally think there
will, i think my love of blake's book as object has a lot to do with what i
like to call the cuddle factor--my sensory memories; the texture of the thin
crisp paper, the peculiar smell, the way the eye scans the page intertwined
with the mental "wow" of discovery
sorry this didn't have much to do with the anything specific in blake's text,
i won't post again until i have something to say about that

For what it is worth, the catalogue of the exhibition includes, in its
introduction, a detailed account of Paul Mellon's assembling of his
collection, and acknowledges that a few of the items in the exhibit
are not from Mellon's own collection, but are drawn from the general
Yale holdings. As befits an exhibition catalogue, this publication supplies
an accounting of the provenance of each item in the exhibition as well as
the appreciative description of Mellon's beneficence.

Hello everyone.
My name is R. William Scranton. I like Blake.
I'm new, so I'm gonna get my stupid question out of the way right now:
You all saw "Dead Man," Jim Jarmusch's latest film, right? Well, if
you didn't, it's got some William Blake stuff in it, and it's the best movie
I saw in 1996, so you should rent it.
Now, a more serious question--
One of Blake's poems that struck me the most was "The Chimney Sweep."
If I remember correctly, there's more than poem by that title-- I mean the
one about little Tommy Dacre who has to have his head shaved. Can any of
you Blake scholars (which I am not, I'm just an appreciator) offer some
enlightenment on this poem? I'm confused by the part where all of a sudden
everyone -poof- winds up in heaven. Any help you could offer would be nice.

The recent exchange about the Europe frontispiece was interesting and
helpful. The most striking version I have seen was hanging on the wall
at George Goyder's house in Long Melford when I visited him a few years back.
Its background was black and its sun blood red. I will check the Lister book
because from Jennifer's post it sounds as though the Goyder print resembles
the one Blake made for Tatham. Could it be a copy?
That leads me to two questions:
1) George Goyder believed his print was executed by Blake. He
said, however, that Bob Essick, when he saw it, thought it was a copy. I
wonder if anyone has evidence or could point me to evidence either way.
I have not seen any printed references to the Goyder print, perhaps
for good reason. Bob Essick or Jerry Bentley would be the best people
to respond on this point, but they seem not to be on the list. It may
be also that the matter is a bit sensitive in the wake of George
Goyder's death in January. That leads to a related question:
2) Can someone point me to the most current source of printed
information about the various versions of this plate? Has there been
an article on it in recent years I have missed? (Dare I ask this question
after Mary Lynn's recent post?)
The Europe frontispiece may be the most widely known and
appreciated of all Blake's visual images. It seems to speak directly
to people of different religious backgrounds, and I suspect most see it
as portraying the Judaic-Christian God -- a kind and beneficient one --
creating the world. It's appeal is no wonder since it is a magnificent visual
conception, beautifully executed. It came to mind a couple weeks ago -- before
it entered Blake On-line -- at the great exhibit of Michelangelo drawings
from Windsor Castle currently at the Art Institute in Chicago.
The wide appeal of the frontispiece as a happy creation scene does not,
of course, relieve Blakeans from the responsibility of reflecting on what
the plate meant to Blake and how his thoughts about it evolved as he made
new prints and colored them. More posts on these points would be welcome.
