I am really beginning to immerse myself in criticism and other history of
Blake beyond his writings and I have a nother question that I suspect, but
can not confirm. Would Blake have read any Eastern texts in translation
by his time ?

I am finding similarities between his myths and Hindu myths concerning the
seperation of Bramha (the ultimate reality, totality) and Atman (the
individual sense of self). Only when you destroy the Atman can you merge
with Brahma. - compare to "cleanse the doors of perception ..."

His works definitely show traces of Milton and The Bible, but there is an
extra step involved that transcends both of his sources that I find
similar to Eastern thought. Any backers/detractors ?

More of a joke than being serious, but the intonation doesn't always carry
well in print.

As a myth writer he obviously employed more than on mythic or "godlike"
character.

There you go, he created the world in his delusion, one orb at a time.
Therefore, technically you could call him the source although there may
have been other "primeval priests", Urizen is the one who sets the
creation/fall in motion.

1. Lo, a shadow of horror is risen
In Eternity! Unknown, unprolific!
Self-closd, all-repelling: what Demon
Hath form'd this abominable void
This soul-shudd'ring vacuum?--Some said
"It is Urizen", But unknown, abstracted
Brooding secret, the dark power hid.

--- So was it another dark power ?
At other times, Blake is more specific

2. Times on times he divided, & measur'd
Space by space in his ninefold darkness
Unseen, unknown! changes appeard
In his desolate mountains rifted furious
By the black winds of perturbation

and later ---

1. Earth was not: nor globes of attraction
The will of the Immortal expanded
Or contracted his all flexible senses.
Death was not, but eternal life sprung

2. The sound of a trumpet the heavens
Awoke & vast clouds of blood roll'd
Round the dim rocks of Urizen, so nam'd
That solitary one in Immensity

---- Here is supposedly solitary. The only being in the universe.
The source of all eternal life - soon to become mortal...

I wax to Shelley's comment that Poet's are the "unacknowledged
legislators" of the world. Where do you think he learned that from ??

My opinion is that Blake believed his myths and all other myths to be
nonsense, but nonsense with a real purpose - as you stated - to guide
people through an existance that we do not comprehend that will
undoubtedly be littered with troubles and end in death.

Making that experience seem "justified" is a difficult task that obviously
NO ONE has done with complete success but it is the poet, or prophet's
calling to try and do so and has been since writing came about.

The oldest known writings from The Vedas is all about this same kind of
stuff.

Blake doesn't have all the answers but neither did the Mesopotamians, The
Isrealis, The Muslims, The Buddhist, nor tthe most recent Heaven's Gate
Cult.

So what's a body to do about it ?

Blake certainly read the Gita (see his 1809 description of a lost picture
of Wilkins translating), and I suspect that he knew such compendia as
Thomas Maurice's History of Hindostan, which represents most Eastern myth
and religion as misapprehensions of basic Christianity. I don't see much
substantive influence myself, though he clearly found these texts (and
related art) both interesting and to some extent congenial.

All I can suggest is what seemed to work for me.

I started reading Erdman's The Poetry and Prose of William Blake from
beginning to end. Then I started again, then again, etc., all the while
reading whatever books and articles I could get my hands on. Chaos gradually
yielded to comprehension which gradually yielded to insight.

I believe it's wrong to attempt to understand the "characters" prior to
reading the longer poems. You are limiting your comprehension of the Blakean
universe by doing so.

You're not going to get it the first time around. If you could, what would be
the point of reading it?

Yes, the graphics are extremely important but, for me, it was better to get
the words down first, then expand to the words and graphics together. If
you're more clever than I am perhaps you could absorb both at once, however,
many of the works don't include graphics, and these shouldn't be disregarded
in studying Blake. Besides, the words by themselves aren't exactly a walk in
the park, let alone trying to integrate the graphics at the same time.

Among the Elohim, a Human Victim I wander.

May I suggest a perusal of Blake's Dinky & Static miniature Opera Seria,
The Ghost of Abel? It has Elohim & Druids & Jehovah, oh my! And Satan
as the Crusading District Attorney.

I have recently returned from London, England. The cultural, artistic,

immeasurable. Having socialized and developed friendships with individuals
from around the world including Italy, South Africa, Spain, Canada, USA,
Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ireland, and more has given me a tremendous
insight into global business operations and methods. Having worked closely as
a top level manager for a UK Charity, and also as a foreman on construction
for the Australian Embassy in the UK, I have observed many unique and
insightful ideas which I now intend to share.

For two years I have worked closely with a business partner to establish a
small business. In doing so, I have learned the value of hard work. I have
proven my ability to work 12 to 16 hours every day, for months. I have
learned, in detail, exact laws, regulation, and policy of business operations
in over five industries. I have gained magnificent insight into the needs of
a corporation, and what that corporation must expect from its employees.

benefits of this training, I will simply close with a quotation:

In the book The Divine Vision: Studies in the Poetry and Art of William
Blake (1957) there is an article by Piloo Nanavutty called "William Blake
and Hindu Creation Myths." He asserts that in the 18th century Hindu myths
were well known if somewhat garbled in oral accounts, and that Blake
assimilated these influences in various works and characters. The spider
and the beb of creation, "Samsara, mundane existence, which consists of
discordant elements in opposition to one another," "The four persons"
produced from Brimha's breath, and the Four Zoas. Nanavutty has
published other articles tracing Eastern influences on Blakein Journal of
the Warburg and Courtauld Institutes.

Am I the only subscriber to Blake Online who believes that for
university graduate students engaged in writing theses on Blake, and
even for undergraduates taking courses on Blake, the research process
ought to begin in the library? This isn't meant to be a turn-off or a
put-down. I'm glad the Blake group is inclusive, and I hope people
will always feel free to ask basic questions and help each other out.
But for people with an "edu" address, shouldn't a routine library
search be expected to produce fuller and more reliable information
than an online query? Isn't knowledge of how to find things in the
library an important part of a graduate student's education -- perhaps
even more important now than it was before the rise and expansion of
     the Internet?

If a thesis writer who is interested in possible Eastern influences
on Blake, for example, turns first to the basic bibliographical tools
and major reference books, he or she will learn more than a fellow
subscriber can provide. Better yet, the thesis writer will become
accustomed to tapping into a wealth of information that will lead to
further exploration. Finding the "Geeta" painting, the "Ganesha"
engraving, and the work of Piloo Nanavutty and others who share her
interest in Blake's possible knowledge of Hindu sources will lead to
other searches and discoveries. The Internet is a very seductive
medium, but chatting with a global community is no substitute for
delving into books that have been written with great care and reviewed
(and often corrected) by other scholars. In my dinosaur (but
cyber-friendly) opinion, the Internet is best used to update,
complement, and supplement library resources, rather than as an easy
     way to avoid consulting them.

No. In fact, I wouldn't restrict this to graduate students. The same notion
should apply to students at the undergrad and secondary levels as well. In any
case, the worse thing someone can do is send the query to the harried
webmaster at albion.com (me!). --Seth

Seth: We all appreciate your valiant efforts, but I'll bet that ways of
spamming we haven't even dreamed of are forthcoming. The resume was, at
least, amusing.
